When Mr. Monkey was out of town, I went to Top Chef contestant Betty Fraser's Grub with Mama Monkey and Brother Monkey. It's sort of in a weird location in a residential neighborhood. The restaurant even looks like a house.
The place feels small and cozy inside. You can also sit on the outdoor patio.
Blueberry lemonade ($2.50).
Frequent refills of this hot pink yumminess.
BLT ($10.95) -- sweet and sassy bacon on a cheddar kaiser roll with garlic mayo, crisp romaine, and tomato.
The sweet and sassy bacon at Grub is very special -- glazed to the point of almost being candied and infused with a contrasting hotness. Mama Monkey bit into it and said, "This bacon is a little bit spicy!" She's so cute.
Spicy BBQ Pulled Pork ($11.95) -- slow-roasted shredded pork topped with barbecue sauce and a splash of apple cider vinegar, red onions, cole slaw, and southwest aioli.
Brother Monkey delved into this very messy dish, which we all ended up eating with forks. I found it a little too sweet.
Ooh La La! Egg Sandwich ($13.95) -- fluffy scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, two slices of sweet and sassy bacon between two slices of croissant French toast served with a side of maple syrup.
More spicy bacon candy! This was like a McGriddle on steroids. If you can stomach eggs and syrup in one bite, you'll like this. If you can't, you'll hate it. The croissant French toast is rather delicious in its own right.
We enjoyed our meal, but I'm not sure I'd return because I wasn't wowed. Maybe I could be convinced to try some of the comfort food at supper.
Oops, used my other login in ID :P
ReplyDeleteLooks tasty! Especially that blueberry lemonade. I could use that BLT too! :)
ReplyDeleteI forgot about Betty!
ReplyDeleteBacon...I want to nom nom nom. One day, I swear I will finally make it out to CA and try some of these restaurants.
ReplyDeleteThat is a LOT of bacon in that sandwich. Mmmmmm!
ReplyDeleteYum! I've always wanted to check out Grub, and now even more that I know it's a super sassy place :)
ReplyDeleteThat lemonade looks so refreshing.
ReplyDeleteyou had me at "bacon."
ReplyDeleteoh betty...i remember betty. the bacon sounds intriguing BUT betty..., oh betty.
ReplyDeleteHi weezermonkey,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review and pics. :) I agree, I'd probably want to try some other breakfast/brunch places around town first.
I want blueberry lemonade right. now.
ReplyDeleteAnd you guys need to come visit us for Bacon and Beer Fest next year!!!
Looks good! I like cozy places like this. Sucks I don't have many around my place though. I'm a sucker for BLTs, but I have to admit I don't like my bacon glazed. All salt for me!
ReplyDeleteI don't remember that season very well. Do you have a favorite restaurant by a Top Chef contestant?? I'm curious to see who's it'd be..
ReplyDeleteMy girlfriends took me here for my birthday. I loved the french toast...yummy!
ReplyDeleteHave you ever eaten breakfast or lunch there? Their lunches have never impressed me, but I think they do breakfast better, and your meal starts with a bowl of mixed kids' cereal!
ReplyDeleteI'm bummed you weren't wowed; I really liked her stuff on Top Chef.
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of drooling over the bacon.
